Freemasonry is very much an Anglo-Saxon phenomenon. As of the year 2000, of the world’s estimated 5.9 million Freemasons, 4.1 million of them live in the United States and Canada. Most of the others can be found in English-speaking countries. The statistics are somewhat unreliable because someone can be a member of more than one lodge and may be counted in the census more than once. Worldwide estimates place the membership in England and Wales at 550,000, Scotland, 400,000, Ireland, 47,000, greater Europe, 80,000, Australia, 375,000, Latin America, 50,000, Philippines, 10,000, and other areas (India, Japan, Formosa, Africa, and Israel), 288,000.** Freemasons, H. You will get many answers as to why women are not admitted to the order. You will find some orders today who will accept them but they are few and far between. I suppose some--in this age of feminism--have found it politically untenable not to accept women. Some of the reasons for not admitting them are “it was thought proper at first to exclude her, and customs don’t change readily; that the dangers to which she would be exposed because of the prejudice existing against the institution, necessitate her exclusion; that because Solomon employed no women on the temple they can not be admitted into the order, and [finally] that she is excluded because Masonry is Masonry. (See Calcott’s Disquistions, p. 248).”* The last reason might be closest to the true answer. “Women can not be admitted because of the fundamental philosophy of the institution. She can not be made a Mason because she can not be made a man.” Freemasonry, like the Kabbalah on which it is based, is a variety of phallic worship. A Woman, of course, has no penis. “The Mason is representative of his deity, the generative principle, and must be a man. He must possess the generative virility.”“In the mysteries, the mother earth, the female principle, was viewed as passive, while the male principle was viewed as the active principle in the generation of life. In order therefore, that the unity and harmony of the symbolism may be maintained, woman must of necessity be excluded from the order. The philosophical basis of Masonry excludes woman for the same reason that a young man in his youth [a boy], a hermaphrodite, an old man in his dotage, or an eunuch is excluded. All this palaver about women not being employed upon the temple, of the dangers they would be exposed to if entrusted with the secrets of the institution, is nothing but ignorance of the true nature and genius of Masonry, or deliberate deception in order to conceal the true reason. A woman can not be made Mason for the same reason she can not be a father. The function and fact of her sex preclude it.”*** A Candid Disquisition of the Principles of the. . . Society of Free and Accepted Masons (1923) by Wellins Calcott, p. 248. ** Freemasonry Interpreted, Martin L. Wagner, 1912, p. 233.
The eighteenth century was a formative time for Freemasonry. While the Sionist-Rosicrucian (English) tradition was coalescing, on the Continent, the Templar (French) tradition would evolve and would become known as the Scottish Rite. It would eventually reign supreme among the myriad secret societies--some Masonic, some not--that would come and go. In America, in 1801, the Scottish Rite was founded on the French Scottish Rite of Perfection. It is one of the two primary rites of Freemasonry--the other being the York Rite--in which a master Mason may proceed after he has completed the three “foundation” degrees of blue lodge masonry: these first three degrees are Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craftsman and Master Mason. Today the Scottish Rite is by far the largest and most important branch of Freemasonry. According to John Daniel in volume one of his Scarlet and the Beast, “this rite is known to all Masons as the ‘Jewish Rite’. Even today, any Gentile who travels the degrees in it is considered a Jewish ‘workman.’ His king is Solomon, and he bows down to a replica of the Ark of the Covenant within the walls of the symbolic Jewish Temple called the lodge.” * It is also described as the “educational arm of the Masonic fraternity.” Its degrees take the history and lessons taught in the blue lodge degrees and expands on them. The fourth through fourteenth degrees investigate and contemplate the ineffable name of God. The major lesson of the degrees is that God is not an object of knowledge, but faith. The Fourth through eighth degrees cover the time of the destruction of King Solomon’s Temple to the time of the writing the Book of Revelations and are religious, historical, moral, and philosophical in nature. The ninth through the twelfth degrees “cover the time of the Crusades and dramatize the knightly virtues and look at mystical symbolism to teach why morality and the practice of virtue are indispensable to the Mason.” The last two degrees, the thirty-first and thirty-second, deal with the “ever-changing relationship between human law as a means of achieving justice and divine justice as an ideal in which the path to immortality is more than the mere outward appearance of goodness.” ** The thirty-third degree is the Knight Commander of the Court of Honor is honorary and cannot by

Interesting Christian scripture taken from the Book of Revelation enlightens us as to the origins of the term “Synagogue of Satan”. In Revelation 2:9 Jesus was exhorting the Church of Smyrna, when he said “I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.” Again in Revelation 3:9, when Jesus Christ was commending the Philadelphia Church, he said, “Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.”According to Daniels, in his book Scarlet and the Beast, the churches of Smyrna and Philadelphia were located in Asia Minor--today’s Turkey-- where the Eleusinian mysteries were very popular. These mystery religions could be thought of as “synagogues of Satan” for in their 12thdegree, the initiate was pronounced a Jew. The same could be said of the present day Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses who claim they are God’s substitutes for the Jews. What about Scottish Rite Freemasonry? It is called the “Jewish rite” even though it was founded by gentiles. Gentiles who are members of this body are referred to as Jewish “workmen”.* The most convincing evidence that Masonry is a “synagogue of Satan” comes from its own rituals. Englishman Warren Weston, in his book Father of Lies (1930) reveals how the Jewish Kabbalah was used to develop the Scottish Rites 33 degrees. He maintains that there are ten separate interpretations for each of the three blue lodge degrees. He further states that these interpretations are Kaballistic in nature, originating from ten Sephiroth, or ten emanations of the Kabbalistic god. Weston lists five interpretations: the philosophic, political, religious, Judaic, and Luciferian. The Luciferian states that when a Mason reaches the 33rd degree, “The Ego becomes Sovereign Pontiff of the Synagogue of Satan. Identified with Satan, the Ego exercises complete Caesaro-papal authority: Man is his own King.”**The Catholic Church has historically maintained that Freemasonry is a “synagogue of Satan.” In 1961, prior to Vatican II, the Roman Curia, the supreme government of the Vatican, authored The Plot Against the Church as a warning to Catholics that their church had been infiltrated by Masonry. The Curia lists five popes who identified Freemasonry as the synagogue of Satan. This work was distributed in August of 1962 to the 2,200 bishops and cardinals who were attending the Second Vatican Council. The introduction contained a warning: “A most dastardly conspiracy is in being against the Church. Its enemies are about to destroy its most sacred traditions and to propose such daring and malevolent reforms. . . .In the middle of last year we discovered that the enemy is again attempting to start a conspiracy to open the doors of Communism, to bring about the collapse of the free world and to deliver the Holy Church into the claws of the Synagogue of Satan.”* Scarlet and the Beast, John Daniel, 1994, p. 194 ** Father of Lies, Warren Weston, 1930
Maybe. Since the founding of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717, every British king has been a mason. “On 5 December 1952 His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, consort of the new Queen Elizabeth II, as yet uncrowned, was initiated into the secrets of Freemasonry by the Worshipful Master of Navy Lodge No 2612. He joined against his will. His uncle, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was - in the words of an impeccable source close to the Royal Family- ‘fiercely opposed’ to Freemasonry, and had strongly advised Philip to have nothing to do with it. But in 1947 when Philip became engaged to Princess Elizabeth, his future father-in-law King George VI had made it ;lain that he expected any husband of his daughter to maintain the tradition of royal patronage of Freemasonry. George was an ardent Mason and finally extracted a promise from Philip to join the Brotherhood. George died before Philip was able to fulfill the promise, but despite his own reservations (he regarded the whole thing as a silly joke) and his uncle’s hostility, he felt bound to honor his promise to the dead King.”* “Philip’s apathy and Mountbatten’s antipathy have had their effect on Prince Charles, the heir to the throne. Mountbatten, as Charles’ favorite uncle, made a lasting impression on the future King and Charles remains adamant, despite rumors to the contrary, that he does not wish to become a Freemason. A greater influence in this direction than either his father or his uncle, however, has been his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who had much of the responsibility for Charles’ upbringing when his parents were traveling. The Queen Mother, despite- perhaps because of - being the wife of a devoted Freemason, does not approve of the Brotherhood. She is a committed Bible-believing Christian and , largely due to her influence, Prince Charles too is a committed (as opposed to nominal) Christian.”** * Knight, Steven, The Brotherhood, London, Graphton Books, 1985, p210** Knight, p212
